Destination
Glaciers, pack ice and polar bears beneath the midnight sun.
Halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole, Svalbard is one of the wildest corners of the Arctic. Glaciers spill into deep fjords, sea ice drifts along the coast and, through the summer, the sun never sets. Small expedition ships sail from Longyearbyen into waters few people ever see, in search of polar bears on the pack ice, walruses hauled out on remote beaches and seabird cliffs alive with puffins and guillemots.
Highlights

Sail to the edge of the pack ice, where seals rest on drifting floes and, with luck, a polar bear crosses the ice in its natural element.

Step ashore at weathered trappers’ huts and 17th-century whaling sites such as Smeerenburg, where walruses now rest on the beaches.

Cruise beneath towering ice fronts in fjords such as Liefdefjorden and Raudfjorden, where calving glaciers fill the water with drifting ice.
